CHRONICLE

Five-hundred years of documentation plus nine-hundred years of genetically traceable origins compose the history of the Scherschel saga. Together, all Scherschel descendants reflect toward the past to a unified point of origin as we also look forward in time to the continued growth of our line. From 1140 A.D. in Krakauer Berg, Germany to all around the world in the 21st Century, here is a timeline of some very notable events in the Scherschel story.

HISTORY

2022

Ricarda Scherschel becomes the first Scherschel descendant to settle in New Zealand and expand the family line to that country. Her paternal grandfather was from Alsace, France and then he had relocated to Marl and Recklinghausen in North Rhein-Westfalia, Germany.

2019

Scherschel Legacy forms as a global organizational entity unifying all branches of Scherschel descendants and ancestors across North America and Europe.

1989

Catherine Anne Scherschel becomes the first Scherschel descendant born in Hammersmith, London, England to parents Peter Scherschel and Jacqueline More to become the first branch of Scherschels in the U.K.

1966

Steven Ralph Scherschel, a Scherschel descendant from Indianapolis, IN, USA migrates to Saskatchewan and establishes the Scherschel surname presence in Canada.

1958

The first reunion gathering of Scherschel descendants from multiple branches in North America at the town of Bedford, Indiana, USA.

1939

Scherschel brothers (Paul Joseph and Leo Michael) migrate from Michigan to northern California and establish the first presence of the Scherschel surname in America’s west coast states.

 

1907

The fifth migration and first Hungarian branch of Scherschel ancestors immigrate from the Temeswar (Timisoara) region of Hungary (present day western Romania) to settle near Chicago, Illinois, USA. Alexander Scherschel was the immigrant who established a new branch of Scherschel descendants near Chicago. His ancestors were of the Banat (Danube) Swabian Germans who had settled the Temeswar region in the late 18th through 19th Centuries.

1901

One of the 1st generation Scherschel descendants in North America retires to Bedford, Indiana, USA. This branch creates the largest group of Scherschel descendants to carry the surname anywhere in North America.

1881

September 21st, The fourth migration of Scherschel ancestors immigrate leaving their homeland in Sankt Wendel, Saarland, Germany to settle in Galipolis, Ohio, USA.

Scherschel descendants begin to cross the border from Germany and begin to establish branches of the family in Luxembourg.

1861

Multiple 1st generation Scherschel ancestors fight for the Union Army in the U.S. Civil War.

April, The only known migration of Evangelische Kirche (Lutheran) Scherschel ancestors immigrate leaving their homeland in Pfalz-Bavaria, Germany to settle in Akron, Ohio, USA. All other groups of Scherschel ancestors who migrated to America were Roman Catholic.

1838

The third migration of Scherschel ancestors immigrate leaving their homeland in Wemmetsweiler, Saarland, Germany to settle near Rock Island, Illinois, USA.

1837

June 22nd, The first migration of Scherschel ancestors immigrate after a two month journey aboard the Bargue Paoli vessel leaving their homeland of Illingen-Gennweiler, Saarland, Germany to settle in Logan, Ohio, USA.

August 10th, The second migration of Scherschel ancestors immigrate leaving their home in Sankt Wendel, Saarland, Germany to settle in Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA.

1836

The first scouting trip for land and immigration to North America is completed by Johannes Scherschel and his children from Illingen-Gennweiler, Saarland, Germany. Johannes and his family return to Germany but immigrate to America the next year.

1795

The first known documented Scherschel resides in the country now known as Hungary. Banat Danube Swabian Germans begin to settle the area incentivized by cheap land and benefits at the offer of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

1748

Felice Scherschel is one of the earliest recorded Scherschels to live in the Alsace-Lorraine region of France. Descendants of the Scherschel line would go on to live in the villages of Alsace, Lorraine, Thionville and many other places in eastern France. Today, the Scherschel line thrives in France as one of the main contemporary homelands.

1738

Johannes Hennericus “Heinrich” Scherchel is born in Reissenberg, Germany. Heinrich is the common ancestor for all Scherschel descendants in North America with the exception of the Hungarian  (Banat Danube Swabian) branch of Scherschel descendants.

1700

The largest branches of Scherschels in Saarland cluster in two groups of Nothern Saarland and Southern Saarland Scherschels in the villages of the two areas. Most North American Scherschels descend from these clusters of ancestors.

1696

Georg Scherschel is recorded as one of the first known Scherschels to be buried in Austria. Scherschels resided in the Austro-Hungarian Empire in large numbers predominantly from the late 1600s to late 1800s. The Austro-Hungarian empire sought Germanic settlers to infill the open lands of its territory at its peak.

1565

Michael Scherschel is one of the earliest known Scherschels recorded in parish records as the father of Salome Scherschel who was baptized on November 7, 1587 at the Evangelische Kirche (Lutheran) church in Heilbronn, Wurttemberg, Germany. 

1517

The Reformation divides the house of Scherschel descendants in the German states of the Holy Roman Empire between the Roman Catholic and Evangelische Kirche (Lutheran) professions.

1140

A direct Scherschel patrilineal ancestor is buried at the site of Krakauer Berg, Germany. Confirmed through DNA analysis in 2023.
